Impact Statement
Evidencing the impact of Specialist School Status on
Cognition and Learning

An analysis of an example of good practice for its impact on cognition and learning with special regard to our Core Professional Purpose – Learning together, growing together. Examples of good practice includetraining, workshops, events, resources, curriculum and other systems innovated since we achieved Specialist Status.

     Example:
Tai Chi work shop

     Description of above:
Ian Howie, TCUGB Instructor, worked with the 6 form and KS3 and 4 students for an afternoon, teaching a set of Tai Chi movements which we needed to inform the Performing Arts work this term on China. The students watched Ian demonstrate a set of movements then they worked in groups, copying the movements and learning a whole sequence of 8 movements.

     Principles:
    At Dorin Park we
•         Promote inclusion
•         Personalise pupils’ learning
•         Provide positive and supportive learning environments
•         Embrace change and development
•         Value our community

    Impact on cognition and learning:
The students had to think about natural movement and the movement of animals, wind, trees and sea. They had to think about the importance of breathing as it relates to movement – an inbreath as the movement opens and an outbreath as the movement closes. They learned a sequence of 8 movements. Some students were able to demonstrate this to others later and one student, Liam, was particularly fluid in his movement.

Impact on the school and/or community:
·       The response from students and staff was very enthusiastic. Some staff have asked for further sessions
·       Staff would like to use Tai Chi as part of the Wake and Shake sessions in the morning on the yard.
·       Staff have asked for a teachers’ workshop after school.
·       The sequence of movement will become part of an afternoon performance later in the year.
·       Students and staff have a better understanding of an aspect of Chinese culture.
